Historical Romance

A lot of work goes into writing any book, but I think it’s safe to say that there are some genres of romance that are more difficult to write, just based on the amount of research that has to be done. Historical books pose a threat to any writer, because not only do we have to procure a good story but we also have to make things historically correct, else we get hung out to dry with the rest of wrong-doers (haha).

My novella, Forbidden Angel, is set in a concentration camp at the end of WWII. Here are some of the tactics I used when it came to making my story historically correct

-I didn’t limit myself to the characteristics of one certain concentration camp (example: Auschwitz). Instead I did research on all prevalent camps, like—Dachau, the extermination camp Sobibor, and of course Auschwitz. I took the knowledge that I learned about camps like these and used it to create the setting for the characters in my novella.

-I also did a lot of double checking, which is probably one of the best tactics to use. Don’t trust anything you find online, unless there are multiple sources that back it up, especially when it comes to Wikipedia. It’s very useful, but not always correct.

This time period is a rather difficult to capture since this is such a tragic event in our history. It is hard to portray something like a romance within the walls of a place where happiness isn’t a common denominator; especially between the Jewish people being held prisoner and the Nazi’s holding them captive. This was a big reason that I chose this story, because it was a challenge. A relationship between these two people seems nigh impossible, based on the circumstances that bring them together.
It’s funny because when I read books about paranormal heroes who are known killers of hundreds, and are proclaimed evil, I don’t think twice about it. When it comes to a German Nazi soldier, it’s hard for me to think of any qualities he could have where he can redeem himself. (Funny how that works, right?) Writing Sarah and Aurel’s story was definitely a challenge for me, especially since I had a hero whom I disliked at first, but grew to love in the end.

With all of that being said, I hope you will check out my debut novella, Forbidden Angel. Available now from Breathless Press!

Blurb:
When captured by the Nazi's, Sarah finds herself in a concentration camp that not only brings her closer to death...but closer to love.
Sarah Brenner, a young Jewish woman, is terrified when she finds herself in the heat of a railcar bound for a work camp in Nazi Germany. For years she, along with her mother and sister, had hidden from the SS, but no one could hide forever. Her hatred for those who have enslaved them is ever-growing, especially when they arrive and she encounters the shockingly handsome Nazi doctor who can’t seem to keep his eyes—or hands—off her.
Aurel Rothstein is not your everyday concentration camp physician. The endless prisoners and lack of care he's allowed to give have made him numb to the work he so coveted. It isn’t until he comes face to face with a beautiful prisoner that his heart becomes involved with his job—a forbidden and fatal move to any Nazi.
When a vile soldier takes direct interest in Sarah, she will be forced to make a choice that will change her life forever: ignore the pull toward the handsome doctor or give in to the forbidden passion he awakens with only a look. Either way they both risk everything...

Excerpt:
The doctor was kissing her. She was kissing him back. Sarah had been afraid when he'd carried her to his office. The word "experimentation" terrified her, but he did nothing of the sort. He'd actually fed her and given her some water. He even made her something to take back to her family. He was being so kind, and when his gaze smoldered and he said something about inspecting her body, she'd easily melted for him.

There was something wrong with her. She shouldn't be feeling this way, but the moment his rough hands caressed her achy back, she was lost to her nerve endings. Never before had she felt such desire from the mere brush of fingertips against her skin. The pain in her back immediately ceased, and all she could feel was pleasure.

His kiss was soft and tentative at first, as if he was afraid he'd scare her away, but she kissed him back and reveled in the groan of defeat he gave. He ran his hands deliciously over her hardened nipples, teasing them, tracing where his mouth had kissed just moments before.

He's a bad person, her mind kept trying to tell her, but she ignored the warning. Something about this man just felt so right.

"What's your name, angel?" he asked as he broke away from her lips. Did he just call her angel? She pondered this pet name for a moment before he leaned in and nipped her neck.

"Mmm, I'm no angel." She truly wasn't. She was selfish just like any other person.

"Yes, you are, angel. Your name?"

"Sarah," she murmured as he traced his tongue along her sensitive collarbone. Never in her life had anything felt this good. She'd been with one man before they stopped going into public. She didn't dislike the sexual acts she explored with him, but they felt like nothing compared to this.

"If I am an angel, then so are you." Sarah temporarily forgot his actions outside of this room, the other things he did. Only an angel could bring forth sensations this exquisite.

"No, that I am not." His voice rumbled like a hurricane.

"Okay, a dark angel then, but still an angel."

Excerpt Tuesday

This week for excerpt Tuesday I have Piper Kay with me to share her newest release, Twisted Cherry.

Blurb: Evan is hiding his urges for other men the only way he knows how--by pretending to live a life of wenching, and by seeking the needle of tattoo artists who impart a kind of guilty pain. But when he meets Gabe, owner of the Twisted Cherry tattoo parlor, he can’t hide his desire for the hot and sexy guy. Gabe, openly gay, proceeds to show Evan how he can be tattooed not just by a needle, but by stinging hot love too.

Excerpt:
Gabe flashes his catch sexy smile at me, as he slides his hands up under my shirt. He lifts my shirt over my head and throws it over the side of the couch. I’m now standing buck naked for the first time in my life, in front of a man. My nerves are shot.
He guides my hands, helping me remove his shirt too. I step completely out of my pants leg that’s still around my ankle. He looks me up and down with an eat-me-up grin.
Admiring his chest, the firmness and build of his pecs, I spread my hands across him. He’s tight and hard. The small amount of chest hair tickles my fingertips. God, this man is fucking lickable.
Gabe wraps both arms around me, pulling me forcefully into him. The feel of our naked chests, skin to skin, hardens my dick again and there’s no way to stop it. Shit, I don’t want to stop it.
His nipples rise into hard nubs and push against mine. Running my hands along his back, I trace the muscular curves in his back. He takes my ass into his hands, squeezing me tight, but gentle.
He slips his hands around to my front and squats a little. He begins tracing his fingers inside my thighs, up and down, teasing.
Gabe takes my hands and leads them to the button on his pants. He begins giving me kisses again. His tongue parts my lips, and his kisses are more tender than a woman’s. Saucy-sweet.
I unbutton his jeans, then slide the zipper down. I can feel him under his jeans, but he isn’t hard. How does he do that? I am at full attention here. He caresses my hands. Shit, they’re shaking from nerves.
Guiding my hands, he leads me to his waistband. Together, we slip his jeans over his hips and down his legs. He kicks his boots off and with his foot he guides his jeans off, one leg after the other.
He pulls back from the kiss, and stands there, not moving. I stare into his eyes, lost. I gaze down his bulging chest muscles, admiring the tattoo he has located right above his belly button. It looks like a portal of some sort. I reach with my finger tips and trace it. Continuing to look downwards, past the wicked navel, I see him in all his glory. He’s fucking magnificent.
Again, he guides my hands to him, to touch him. I’ve never touched another man. All I know is what feels good to me, so I wrap my hands around his cock like I would my own. I slowly stroke him, and he does the same for me.
Gabe is showing me every step of this. What he does to me, I do to him. It’s like follow the leader. Unable to resist, I move my mouth to his neck, licking him. His taste is kind of like sweat on leather, but also sweet. I smell his cologne. He’s wearing Stetson, my favorite. I lick and swirl my tongue up to his ear and nibble his lobe. He moans, and I almost get off just hearing him. This is the most satisfying sound I have ever heard in my fucking life.

Excerpt Tuesday

This week's excerpt is from my book, Betrayed, that releases on Friday.

Blurb

Tasha Thomas's life has been turned upside down. One day at work she finds evidence that her boss the Mayor is heading up a sex ring. She’s in over her head. He sends his men after her for knowing too much information. After escaping her kidnappers, she runs to her husband Alex for help.

Alex is shocked to see his wife who left months ago on his doorstep. He's never gotten over her leaving. He vows to protect her with the very last breath in his body. Except all the evidence points to her being guilty of being the head of the sex ring, his FBI team has been trying to bring down. Can he prove her innocents and show her that they still belong together, before he losses her for good?

Excerpt

A hot palm pressed into her hips, forcing out a shaky breath. Alex stood behind her.
“Move your legs back some more,” he said in a low voice. “I’ll steady you. Just like that, good, now arch your back some more.”
His finger trailed across her spine, and without thinking, she arched toward him. Her mind stilled, and all she could think of was him, and how his hands held her. How she wanted him to do more, touch her further. Heat raced down her spine, pooling into her sex.
“Thanks.” She hoped he didn’t hear the way her voice shook.
His hand slid the rest of the way down her spine and over her ass. Tremors rushed through her body as he massaged like he had all day to keep her on edge. Alex pressed a finger close to the cleft, and she stopped breathing. He pushed his hand up her leg and into her shorts and panties. Without a warning, he plunged deep into her wet folds. Ruthless. He didn’t let her body get use to the sensation before he circled her sex. Nothing felt as good as her husband touching her.
“Alex, we can’t.” No matter how badly she wanted him, she couldn’t risk her heart.
With a quick flick of his finger against her clit, all reasoning of why they couldn’t vanished. She grabbed her legs to keep steady.
“Shh, Tasha, feel me touching you. Don’t think for now.” Strain dripped with each word. He’d been as affected as her.
She couldn’t think even if she wanted to with the sensations washing over her body. Alex’s erection pressed against the small of her back. Blood rushed to her head making her lightheaded. She should say something, but words wouldn’t come—only moans. He wanted her as much as she wanted him in this moment. Her breasts ached with need as her nipples pebbled with each relentless stroke of her clit. As he drove her closer to the edge, she couldn’t catch her breath. Pure hot heat scorched across her body.
“Yes, right there, oh my, Alex!” she screamed out her climax.
He moved back as he helped her stand. Slowly, she raised her hands to her head as the blood drained back, and the lightheadedness she felt started to fade. Spots danced on the outside of her vision. She closed her eyes and waited for the rushing feeling and the room to stop spinning. What just happened? Damn it, she’d let her guard down for what? An orgasm? No, make that a mind blowing one. One she would do all over again.
She took a deep breath in, opened her eyes and saw him staring back at her. Her heart ached to let go, to fall in his arms forever and never leave.
Tasha turned on her heels and made her way to the door. She had to get away, before they did more than they already had. Alex’s hand wrapped around her bicep, not too tight, but enough to get her attention and silently tell her they weren’t finished. She tried to jerk away from his grasp, but he wouldn’t have any of that, and he pulled her against the hard pecks of his chest.
“Where are you going?” his raspy voice growled.
