Excerpt Tuesday with Beth D. Carter

Once Upon a Love Story by Beth D. Carter

Excerpt:

So, Caleb Tasker was an onion. Layers and layers hid under that muscular forest ranger façade and she wasn’t sure if she liked that or not. She had just figured he’d be a great diversion for the evening, something to break up the relentless monotony, but now, she was afraid she might end up caring about what he said. And that was dangerous.

When she’d first arrived in Los Angeles, she’d been a sixteen year old dropout searching for fame and fortune. She’d run away from home with a huge chip on her shoulder thinking the world owed her something, and the streets were a mean place for a young girl alone. She’d done some pretty stupid things. But now she had a code, ethics that had helped save her years ago. And feeling sorry for a man was close to the top of that list. Emotions led to acting on stupid impulses and she refused to allow herself to be vulnerable ever again.

Still, this was just one harmless little date. Right?

She pulled into the Denny’s parking lot and cut the engine. He exited the car and hurried around to her side to help her out of the car. She stared at his hand as if it were going to bite her.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“A gentleman always helps a lady out of a car.”

“Says who?”

“My momma.”

That made Delilah smile. “My momma taught me to pick the wealthiest drug dealer on the street and get myself pregnant by him.”

That made him pause and blink in confusion. “What?”

She waved her comment away. Why did she go and tell him something like that? “Never mind. Come on.”
She locked the car up and headed toward the door, acutely aware of the big, muscular man behind her who towered over her. She almost felt small, which was saying something since she stood almost six foot tall in heels. Her legs were one of her best assets and she used them to her advantage when she danced at The Pink Pony.

They were shown to a booth in a back corner and the bright lights finally allowed her to see him in vivid detail. His eyes were a sky blue and his hair was a dirty blonde, curling around the edges of his collar. It looked soft to the touch and her fingers tingled with the desire to bury into the crisp strands. He reminded her a little of Daniel Craig. Very fine lines crinkled the area near his temples, alluding to a life where he laughed a lot, but the brackets that encircled his mouth hinted that some pain had mingled in there as well. He looked like a man of deep emotion, one who devoted himself wholly to whomever or whatever task he faced. She wondered if he would make love just as thoughtfully and she shivered a little bit at the wandering thought, her body thrumming to life with an awareness she’d never felt before.

Blurb:

Caleb Tasker lost his wife to cancer but it took him a long time to put her memory to rest.  Deciding he needs a vacation, he accepts the gracious invitation of living in his friend’s Malibu home for an over due holiday.

Delilah Ward grew up in rural Mississippi and ran away when she was sixteen, moving to Los Angeles with thoughts of being anything but the person she was born to be.  But reality settled in quickly and the bright lights of Hollywood soon faded into the dark abyss of dancing on a darkened platform.

Caleb is used to love being easy and Delilah is used to fighting against everything.  They have nothing in common except a wildfire attraction that won’t let go of them.  But when tough choices need to be made, will they both be able to be honest to what they really want?

My Bio:

I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers.  I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box. Music inspires me and each story has their own signature song.

I am a full time writer and  stay at home mom which means I watch a lot of animated movies.  Over and over again.   I hate washing dishes but I love cooking. I hate washing clothes but I love wearing them. Writing my bio is difficult because I never know what to say so I hope you like this one.  My favorite color is red but I look best in black (it’s slimming).  I hate people who don't pick up their dog's crap in public places, people who don’t use turn signals, and I really hate people who are rude and condescending. I especially hate discrimination in all and every form.  And although I love holding a book in my hand, I absolutely adore my ereader, whom I’ve named Ruby.  So many books at the touch of a button!  I love to hear from readers so I’ve made it really easy to find me on Facebook or Twitter or email me at: beth@bethdcarter.com.

Excerpt Tuesday with Iyana Jenna

Alyssa, thank you for the opportunity to guest blog on your space!
Before I go on with my new book, Release Me from Evernight Publishing, I want to talk a bit about my friend who first introduced me to the reading world. We were friends at the elementary school. We and another friend always played together when we were on grades 1 to 3. (I moved out of town on grade 4.) We often went to each other’s house to play and when I went to her house one day, she showed me a red velvet treasure box (with a key!) She opened it and I was, like, ooh! It wasn’t gold or silver or toys or dolls inside it. No. They were books!  I don’t remember all of their titles but if I’m not mistaken most of them were books by Enid Blyton, such as Famous Five, Secret Seven, and Malory Towers. I fell in love immediately with the Famous Five and begged my mom to buy me the complete series. I guess those books really made me love reading so much, and end up with writing as well. I owe my friend for that!

Blurb:

Taking a break from dealing with his father’s clients on legal matters, Nicholas Haynes went out to the sea on his yacht—only to find a man floating in the water. The man was still alive, much to Nicholas’s relief.

Gregory Phillips was a private investigator and his last job almost turned him into fish food if not for Nicholas. Little did he know that the main suspect in his case was one of Nicholas’ father’s clients. When Nicholas insisted on taking care of Gregory after the incident that almost killed him, can he trust Nicholas enough with his life?

Excerpts:

Stanley Haynes threw the newspaper, and it landed with a slap on Nicholas's plate. The headlines blared at Nicholas as though his father had shouted at him.
Heir to US Banking Chain Wedded?
"You ever plan to tell us about this, Nicholas?"
Nicholas glanced briefly at his mother sitting across from him, but she kept stirring the cooling coffee in her cup. Nicholas could see a smile flicker in her eyes. He shrugged.
“Come on, Dad. You know it was impossible for me to talk about it before everything was done.”
“Are you saying you don’t trust me, or your mom—” Stanley threw a glance at his wife, and his eyes widened. “You knew about this?”
She threw her hands up.
“God, no, honey. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
“All right, all right.” Stanley took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. “Is it that Phillips guy?”
“Of course. Who else?” Nicholas grinned.
His mother went back to stirring her coffee. Her voice was calm when she asked, “When was it, Nicholas? How come both of us didn’t know anything about it?”
“A moment after Greg was released from the hospital.”
“Wow. That fast?”
Nicholas chuckled. “Yeah. Now you can’t accuse me of being a playboy anymore.”
“That’s good, dear.” His mother took his hand, and Nicholas squeezed hers gently. “So those journalists—they just found out the other day?”
“They’ve just seen this ring, that’s all.” Nicholas lifted his left hand and eyed the simple platinum band around his ring finger.  Gregory had exactly the same kind of ring around his finger.
****
A month earlier
It was the lulling sounds of the waves and the gentle breeze above the vast, boundless ocean that Nicholas loved most. He could spend days, even weeks, drifting seemingly without any course and purpose on his boat, all by himself. After months dealing with his father’s clients about legal matters, he was always desperate for some time alone. Sometimes he just couldn’t understand why he had to work twice as hard as the other employees in his father’s bank when he was his only son. However, most of the time, he just couldn’t see it any other way. His father was not the type to want to spoil his family. Everyone had to earn what life had given to them. Nobody was allowed to simply ask and receive.
Today, though, he ended up not alone.

Excerpt:

Frowning at the unfamiliar number on her caller I.D., Kitty nodded at the contractor she’d hired to do the rehab on a nineteen-twenties four-square she planned on reselling within the next six months. She’d been making the rounds of the four construction projects she had underway. It was her experience that if she didn’t keep routine tabs on them, the projects slowed. Contractors often responded to the squeaky wheel.
She smiled as she carefully made her way across the sub-flooring, making sure her high heels resonated through the empty house. She knew that sound translated into power with most construction workers. As usual, she’d chosen her wardrobe with her day in mind. This was not a day for refined, potentially high-paying buyers. This was a day for making sure the men she hired didn’t forget they were working for her. In addition to her blue high heels, she’d chosen a beaded pair of blue denim hip huggers and a simple canary yellow cardigan that failed to reach her jeans.
She avoided eye contact with the workers as she made her way to her car. She saw no need to embarrass them as they fantasized about her ass. One of her goals was to be the squeakiest wheel contractors ever heard. So far, she seemed to be meeting her goal.
She chuckled, leaned up against the car and glanced back toward the four-square. Men working on its siding quickly found something to do. Damn, she loved being a woman.
She punched a button on her cell, retrieving and returning the most recent call. Brushing her hair aside, Kitty brought the phone to her ear.
She startled when she heard the deep drawl.
