Six Sentence Sunday

This week's six comes from my newest release, On A Dare.

Taking another big drink of her wine, she made her way to the couch, placed the glass onto the coffee table and then picked up her laptop. Her palms slick, she had almost dropped it before setting it on her lap. She still didn’t understand how she knew when things were slightly different between them; she could sense it and this time was no different. All day her stomach had been in knots, making her eager to know what her Sir would ask of her. Kaily hadn’t gotten a chance to check her email at work with meeting after meeting today. Logging in, a message from Jason stared back.

  5. That's a good hook. The words 'her sir' are very evocative, making me wonder about a dom/sub relationship between them.

The phrasing of 'she had almost dropped it' seems jarring to me, though. I don't understand why we're in the past perfect tense when things appear to be happening in order. Maybe delete the word 'had' and leave the rest as they are? That's just a helpful suggestion though.
